Spring Clips

Heat, Salt, Strength: The Unexpected Journey of a Little Metal Clip

Our Lever Clips are heat treated to give them strength and ductility. They are made from spring steel and hardened using the Austemper process. This involves heating the parts to above 800°C for a short amount of time, and then quenching them into a salt bath which is held at a steady temperature of approximately 330/340°C.

This allows the steel structure to change and produces a hardened component that will retain its strength in situ.

Part of the process sees the colour of the clip change from silver to a bluey grey. This is a result of the time spent in the salt bath and any surface oxidation that might occur whilst held in the salt at the elevated temperature. To give the clips a small amount of corrosion protection a dry to touch dewatering oil is applied to minimise the risk of rusting.
